Effectiveness of Back Surgery

The article cites two recent studies that question the effectiveness of surgery for spinal problems. The article begins with a negative finding that «estimates that $ $38 to $50 billion each year »in surgical treatments for lower back pain in the United States.".
1st study
In one of the studies, a research team analyzed workers' compensation claims in Washington State to see if they could determine which work-related injuries would result in back surgery.
The results of this study were published on May 15, 2013, in the journal *La columna* under the title, ‘Early Indicator of Lumbar Spine Surgery Following Occupational Back Injuries: Results of a Prospective Study of Workers in Washington State.’
According to the article, the study found that of the 1,885 workers injured in this study, 174 (9.2 %) underwent lower back surgery within 3 years of their injury.
However, the researchers found that the rate of surgery depended largely on what type of doctor those injured workers saw first.
If an injured worker was first seen by a surgeon, 42.7 % underwent surgery. However, if they were first seen by a chiropractor, only 1.5 % would undergo surgery.
The rate of undergoing expensive surgery dropped by 96.5 % simply by choosing to see a chiropractor instead of a doctor first.
2nd study
The second study, conducted in Oslo, Norway, focused on two groups of people with back problems. One group underwent surgery, while the other group received a conservative treatment (excluding chiropractic care). The results of this study showed that There was no benefit for the group that underwent facial surgery compared to the group that did not.
Conclusions
In response, Dr. J. G. Moellendorf, DC, ND, LCP, a naturopath and chiropractor, asks, »Why would we spend billions of dollars annually on spinal surgery that yields no better results than conservative therapies, even though disability rates have risen and patient dissatisfaction with the outcomes has increased?” «.
In response to this study, the University of Southern California’s School of Health Sciences issued a statement noting, «This important study was conducted in collaboration with prestigious institutions, including the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, the University of Washington School of Public Health, the University of Washington School of Medicine, Ohio State University School of Public Health, and the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.”.
