The director of the Hypertension Center and principal investigator, Professor George Bakris, stated during an interview that the chiropractic technique studied «It has the same effect as not just one, but two antihypertensive medications administered together. Fifty patients with mild hypertension participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: 25 in the control group and 25 in the treatment group. None of the participants were taking blood pressure medication.
Participants in the experimental group were treated with a chiropractic technique based on aligning the atlas (the first cervical vertebra). Participants in the control group received a sham treatment that was indistinguishable from the real one. The patients did not know which group they belonged to.
They were treated once a week for 8 weeks. At the end of the study, it was shown that, compared to the control group, the treatment group had an average reduction of 14 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure (the first number) and 8 mm Hg in diastolic blood pressure (the second number).
All patients who participated in this study were screened beforehand to determine whether they had atlas subluxation. Those who did not were excluded.
This study shows that, NOT that chiropractic treatment can cure high blood pressure, but that a subluxation of the atlas can cause high blood pressure, and once that subluxation is corrected, blood pressure returns to normal. Of course, there are other causes of high blood pressure, and they cannot be eliminated with the same treatment.
