Optimism as a Tool

People who see the glass as half full seem to be more fascinating, enjoy better health, and live longer!

How is it that some people always see the glass as half empty, while others always see it as half full? How is it that certain people always seem so optimistic and positive? And why do negative people love the company of others so they can share their sorrows and complain about their luck in life?

Maintaining a positive attitude is essential to your overall health. Have you noticed that negative people get sick more often? That’s because your mental attitude has a lot to do with your physical health. It especially affects your cardiovascular health and can even influence your life expectancy.

Method

So… what can you do to develop a more positive attitude if you don't have one, or to maintain it, or even to improve the one you already have? Try these simple but effective suggestions:

• Adopt an attitude of gratitude. – Instead of always focusing on what you don’t have, focus on what you do have and be grateful. Positivity breeds positivity, and the same is true the other way around.

• Be helpful to others – Those who reach out to others achieve two things: they tend to forget their own problems and help someone in need.

• Use positive affirmations – Stop that voice in your head that says, «You’re less than…» and replace it with positive thoughts you have about yourself, such as, «I’m a good friend.» «I’m not afraid because I have faith.» «I enjoy many blessings.»

• Eat well – Instead of reaching for sugary snacks that make you think they’ll make you feel better, reach for some raw vegetables instead.

• Get enough rest: It's hard to stay positive when you're irritable because you haven't gotten enough sleep. Make sure you get enough rest to recharge your batteries!

• Exercise – The benefits of exercise have been proven time and time again – When you exercise, your brain releases chemicals known as endorphins, the “feel-good» chemicals.

• Reduce stress: To the extent that you can, try to alleviate stress in your life and distance yourself from sources of stress—whether they’re family members, toxic people, or situations over which you have little control.

And by all means—keep your chiropractic appointments! Many of our members tell us that they feel better mentally and emotionally as a result of their regular adjustments. Stress affects us in many ways, so we need to start with our attitudes and keep moving forward until we achieve good health—so be proactive!
