Chiropractic side effects

If the risk were as high as some claim, we would see reports of several thousand or even hundreds of thousands of cases each year in the medical literature reporting side effects of chiropractic.

And in the media, according to the number of treatments performed each year, and this is not the case. Only the sensationalist press can bias information according to its own interests in this regard.

The chiropractic specific adjustment is a very controlled manipulation and chiropractic side effects of the treatment are very rare. There has been a lot of research on our https://quiropractica1.com/76-menos-riesgos-con-la-quiropractica/chiropractic treatment and the patient informs us that their satisfaction is always very high.

But as with any therapeutic procedure, there are possible side effects and risks involved. Did you know that when you take a painkiller the severity of the frequency of side effects is higher than with chiropractic treatment?

So what are the side effects of chiropractic treatment?

What are the chiropractic side effects?

Approximately half of the patients have some form of reaction to treatment, but fortunately the symptoms in the majority (85%) are mild. Local discomfort and fatigue are the most common side effects, which disappear within 24 hours for most (74%). This 1997 study included 4712 treatments in 1058 new patients. Link to the research .

A more recent study, published in “Spine” in 2007, had very similar findings. Se included 19,722 treatments, which is a large study. The aim of the study was to find out what effects the treatment had and the possible side effects of the treatment. The findings were very similar to the previous study. Link to the research .

In the two previous studies, no serious side effects were reported.

Serious chiropractic side effects?

The most serious, but rare, risk is that of a vertebral or carotid artery dissection and stroke after specific cervical manipulation.

The incidence of stroke in previous studies has ranged from 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 5.85 million treatments.. The important thing to remember is that these studies never showed that chiropractic treatment had caused the stroke, but that there was an association with the treatment (meaning that the person had visited a chiropractor prior to the incident).

article about a research in 2001 determined that the risk of such a stroke occurring is 1 in 5.85 million of specific manipulations of the neck. LINK to research .

Another study determined that there was a risk of 1.3 strokes per 100,000 specific manipulations one week after the manipulation. But this study did not they could be sure that the cause was the manipulation due to the delay. LINK to research .

In other words, this should be compared with the rate of spontaneous vertebral artery dissections. Without manipulation, which is estimated at approximately 1-3 per 100,000 people. LINK to research , LINK to more research .

These figures suggest that it is more likely to have a stroke with everyday activities. Cooking at the back of the car, looking up for a long time, painting the ceiling, washing your hair at the hairdressers, doing pilates and yoga, and many more everyday activities.

Research shows that there is no strain on the neck arteries!

Research has shown that the arteries in the neck do not suffer more stress with chiropractic adjustment compared to neck movements in normal daily activities.

This probably came as no surprise to most chiropractors, since a normal neck adjustment rarely involves much more than 45° of rotation and slight extension. This is a position that most people routinely perform routinely in normal activities several times a day. LINK to research .

You are more likely to have a serious side effect from painkillers!

Some important recent research on the safety of neck manipulation has shown that chiropractic neck manipulation is a very low-risk treatment when performed by qualified and experienced specialists such as chiropractors. In fact, there are more risks associated with taking painkillers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the painkillers commonly purchased over the counter and regularly prescribed by medical doctors, such as ibuprofen and aspirin than with chiropractic care.

In the United States, 16,500 people die each year from the use of NSAIDs. . Read more about analgesics here .

Recent scientific reviews also question seriously the effectiveness of the use of analgesics for low back pain, especially considering the risks. LINK to research .

Patients are equally likely to have a stroke after seeing their primary care physician.

New research by prominent researcher, Dr. David Cassidy, published in January 2008 , a nine-year study that showed that the incidence of vertebral artery stroke (VBA) is no higher after seeing a chiropractor than a medical doctor of family.

Family physicians do not manipulate, then, ¿ by what people suffered a stroke after seeing their primary care physician ? Well, the explanation is that people were already in the midst of a stroke when they contacted their chiropractor or family doctor. Neck pain and headache are common symptoms of VBA dissection. and usually precede VBA stroke and people who experience headache and neck pain may choose to consult a chiropractor or general practitioner. LINK to research .

In October 2007, a study, conducted in the United Kingdom, which analyzed the safety of specific chiropractic manipulation of the neck, collected data from 19,722 patients, concluded: «... the risk of a serious adverse event ... was very low to very low». LINK to research .

So, is the risk great?

Everyone has projects, including chiropractors, and you could argue that, as a chiropractor, we would like to underestimate any risk.

Any responsible person would want to know if what they are doing or what they plan to do would carry risks both to themselves and to others, and others might not do it.

But most chiropractors, in my opinion, certainly would. I have never met a chiropractor who would not treat colleagues, friends, family and even their own children. If there was a serious risk, I'm sure they would want to know about it.

If the risk were as high as some claim, we would see several thousand or even hundreds of thousands of cases reported each year in the medical literature and in the media, depending on the number of treatments performed each year, and that is not the case.

So, the studies that say that the incidence of stroke is of 1 in 5.85 million are probably correct., but it appears that the stroke is not due to the chiropractor, but it is an event that now is in place when the patient arrives at the chiropractor's office . LINK to research .

In fact, there is an increased risk of death from activities such as driving a car, pregnancy, taking birth control pills, and other normal activities other than neck manipulation. Dinman, BD; Reality and the acceptance of risk; Journal of the American Medical Association, vol. 244 (11): 1126-1128, 198. LINK to research .

Less conservative treatments, such as neck surgery, are also used in conditions very similar to conditions treated with spinal manipulation. According to research, there is a 3-4% complication rate for cervical spine surgery and 4,000 to 10,000 deaths per million neck surgeries.

(Source: Editorial Committee of the Cervical Spine Research Society The Cervical Spine, Second Edition Philadelphia: JB Lippincott Company 1990: 834).

And if you are considering lumbar spine surgery, There is a risk of death of 7 people for every 10,000 surgeries.

Other activities and the risks they entail

Why exaggerate the risk of chiropractic treatment?

First, exaggerating the risk would serve to undermine the treatment and prevent people from using it, so who would benefit from that?

Probably anyone who is treating similar conditions would benefit, anyone who manufactures pain medication would benefit, and anyone who feels threatened or has a pretext to do so may be motivated to do so.

In the 1970s, the medical profession in the United States (American Medical Association (AMA)) was taken to court by four chiropractors who alleged that they were undermining the profession of chiropractic. The AMA and its officers were guilty, according to the allegations, of attempting to eliminate the chiropractic profession. They lost the trial, so there must be some people who were offended at this court ruling. Maybe they will still be offended? Read more about the test.

There have been some very elaborate attempts in the UK to discredit chiropractic in recent times.

For example, the Professor Edzard Ernst has made several statements to the press in recent years about the risk of chiropractic treatment, which were published.

Unfortunately confused the facts and exaggerated the risk, which was great for the press because it sold papers. In one of the articles, he said that chiropractors should get their act together and investigate the subject, and he was right on that point.

In 2007, Professor Ernst published a research review on revisions in chiropractic treatment. It was a very clever attempt to discredit chiropractic. He found that there was no evidence that chiropractic treatment was effective and, on top of that, it was dangerous. The press loved it! LINK to Ernst JRSM article.

Don't believe everything you read!

In November 2007, several UK newspapers reported on research from Australia, where physiotherapists had used manipulation and compared it to taking painkillers to relieve acute back pain. They found no benefit from using manipulation.

The headline in UK newspapers where ‘Chiropractic treatment proved to be ineffective’.’.

They did not realize that the manipulators were not chiropractors but physiotherapists.

This entire study showed that physical therapy alone is no more effective than the other treatments in this study.

If they had researched the subject a little further they would have noticed that there is a fundamental difference between the manipulation, which was used in this study, and the specific manipulation used by chiropractors.

They would also have known that chiropractors not only use specific manipulation, but combine our treatment with exercise, nutritional advice, lifestyle change advice, etc. Therefore, this study could not have been representative of chiropractic treatment if they had tried. LINK to research .

Now, several valid research papers have been published since then, but none of them have been mentioned in the press. The reason is that ‘our readers wouldn't be interested in reading about it’. Fair enough, you wouldn't expect the press to print something that wouldn't sell much circulation.

These are a few examples of how people are trying to discredit chiropractic treatment. One benefit of this is that it keeps us on our toes and encourages researchers to continue to provide top-notch research for the chiropractic profession.

In conclusion

Doctors of chiropractic are trained to discover who is at risk with a particular method of treatment and can select the method that is most appropriate and safe for you.

Doctors of Chiropractic are trained in medical diagnosis to rule out underlying medical conditions that are not suitable for our treatment, and can refer you to the appropriate person for other treatment if necessary.

Licensed chiropractors are highly trained in specific manipulation and therefore know how to use it safely, compared to other therapists who have taken a short manipulation course.

We are always trying to provide our patients with the best possible care and research has shown that the risk of side effects from chiropractic treatment is very small.

We are also pleased to say that Marc Bony Chiropractic Center, DC has had no patients with any serious side effects as a result of our treatment since we began in 2003. .

Hi. I have been going to my chiropractor for 15 years, but this last time something has not been quite right after the cervical adjustment. I am having some ringing in my ear, and left cheek pain and tooth pain. I have been to my dentist and I have nothing, but I am scared, yesterday I had a fever even .... everything comes from 3 days ago, just when I finished the session. Are these some side effects? Have you heard about it before? Thank you.

Good afternoon. I recently started going to the chiropractor and after performing the doraal adjustment, it is tremendously difficult for me to breathe, I do not know if it is a side effect or if he is doing his job wrong. The chiropractor told me that he is adjusting the cervical nerve that has to do with breathing and that my body is getting used to the change and little by little I will recover my normal way of breathing. I don't know if this is true, that's why I'm asking you, it's a horrible feeling to try to yawn and not be able to.

The same thing happened to me, after an adjustment I have diaphragmatic inflammation. It doesn't seem normal to me to have to wait two months without being able to breathe normally.

Good afternoon, I went to sessions with the chiropractor and after two weeks my spine thunders when I make certain movements. Also, sometimes I feel a weight on my shoulders and my neck in the back is tense. It was scary because I felt bad after the adjustments, my body felt strange and I felt a tingling in my neck. I am worried that I have damaged something.

Congratulations on your article, comprehensive and convincing; in fact this article was the one that motivated me to seek a chiropractor. I was suffering from lower back pain on the left side, now I know it is in the lumbar, occasionally when lifting heavy things. I went to the chiropractor to improve my quality of life because there were times when lifting a gallon of milk would cause pain in my back. First I was given a general examination and a questionnaire, an x-ray was taken where I clearly noticed a reduced space between two lumbar bones. The doctor started with an adjustment the first session, then said he would adjust the muscles as well. For the third session in the same week he took a kind of metal “stick”, similar to the one doctors use to examine the throat, and started to carve my spine strongly specifying that he was doing that to break adhesions; the pain was almost unbearable, the next day a giant bruise was lying on my back, I also noticed that I felt several “little balls” on the sides of the spine. I placed ice as instructed.
I have been going to the chiropractor 2 and 3 times a week for almost 2 months, now my back hurts all the time, I feel fragile from any movement, my left knee has started to hurt and my left ankle too, The right side of my lower back has started to hurt a little, and every time I go to the chiropractor I feel like I am being hit by a car, I feel a lot of pain.
I have not stopped attending the adjustments because I am hoping to improve, but I would like to hear your opinion about my experience. Thank you in advance.
