4 Myths About Back Pain

Myth No. 1

Back pain is normal as we get older

Fact: Just because you add another candle to your birthday cake every year doesn’t mean it’s normal to assume that back pain is a natural part of life. Sure, getting older may make us more susceptible to certain conditions or ailments that can cause back pain. You can take steps to reduce your back pain and keep your spine healthy—through chiropractic care.

Myth No. 2

I exercise, so back pain won't affect me

Facts: Staying in shape and playing sports will help keep your back healthy. Unfortunately, however, there is no way to guarantee that you won’t experience back pain. In addition, staying healthy involves eating a nutritious diet, reducing stressors in your environment, and maintaining good posture.

Myth No. 3

I'm not in much pain—my injury can't be too bad.

Fact: Pain is a poor indicator of how serious your injury might be. Pain may not appear until days, weeks, or even months after the injury occurs because inflammation is developing in your body. If you’re experiencing mild or persistent pain, it might be time to get checked out.

Myth No. 4

If I have back pain, I need to have surgery

Facts: While everyone has experienced back pain at some point in their lives, that’s not a good reason to opt for surgery right away. If you have back pain, start by looking for the least invasive solution possible. Consider this order: first, chiropractic care; second, medication; and third, surgery. If you’re suffering from back pain, make an appointment with your doctor. Back pain may be common, but it’s not normal.
