Studies with a Future

I am part of a fascinating profession. I get to work with my peers and have the opportunity to meet new people every day and help them find a level of health that many of them would never have dared to imagine.

I am a chiropractor, have you or your children ever thought about studying chiropractic?

History

From its beginnings back in 1895, chiropractic has continued to grow and today has become the largest healthcare profession in the world.

Europe is on the verge of a change in healthcare, with people increasingly opting for a more natural approach to taking care of their health, opting for prevention rather than cure by external factors or chemicals to which the body invariably reacts.

Chiropractic is leading this shift toward wellness. Based on the body's innate ability to regenerate and regulate itself, chiropractic employs non-invasive techniques such as drugs or surgery to optimize the body's potential to be healthy.

The chiropractor concentrates on eliminating the interference caused by incorrectly aligned vertebrae which in turn cause long-term health problems. It is physical, not sedentary work and the vast majority of chiropractors are their own boss.

My healing

In my case, I was introduced to chiropractic when I was 17 years old, about to start a career in medicine. The way they looked at health and how to take care of it was dramatically different from what I imagined health to be. You feel bad, you take something, you're fine.

Until my chiropractor asked me two questions that would change the course of my studies and my life.

If pain is a bad thing, why does childbirth hurt so much? Then came the other one: have you ever thought about studying chiropractic?

The creation of the school

Years later, during a chiropractic seminar, my colleague and friend Adrian Wenban, now director of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic, set a group of colleagues a challenge: to create a chiropractic college in Barcelona.

We all got down to work, first raising the necessary funds to be able to create this dream and then negotiating agreements with universities willing to host our initiative.

It was successful: today the BCC is part of the Pompeu Fabra University, the number one university in Spain and the 200th in the world.

Then we got the cooperation of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, number two in Spain and number 204 in the world. Our joint effort has allowed us today to have a university in the heart of Barcelona, where our first batch of new colleagues will leave in two years.

It may seem strange that a group of professionals invests so much time and effort in creating a university that will soon graduate our competitors. Well, no: today there are 240 chiropractors nationwide, one for every 370000 inhabitants.

In the USA, where the profession was born, there is one chiropractor for every 3500 people. We need more people! There is too much demand and not enough supply.

A radiant future

It turns out that chiropractic has a lot of future. A recent Fast Magazine study, chiropractic is considered one of the top 10 jobs in the U.S. today.

Adding more information, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the profession will experience 20% growth between 2008 and 2018. Chiropractic has a bright future and being a part of it is simple.

BCC students are an international group of energetic young people. They attend classes in English and Spanish, as much of the literature on the profession is written in English.

Applicants to study at BCC must have knowledge of basic sciences, essentially biology and chemistry, and be proficient in Spanish and English.

From there, the professionals who created the BCC have created a specific curriculum based on our experience with the goal of creating professionals who will meet the daily health needs of people who increasingly seek other ways to take care of themselves, beyond the traditional.

I am part of a fascinating profession. Have you ever thought about studying chiropractic?
