Osteoarthritis and Chiropractic Care
Did you know that osteoarthritis affects one in four people, and that the average age of those affected is under 40?
What affects men and women equally and can occur at any age?
Context
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common degenerative joint diseases. It is characterized by the degeneration and wear and tear of one or more joints. The tissue that lines the joint surfaces—cartilage—becomes thinner and, over time, develops cracks.
The stress on the joint increases as the cartilage wears away. The joints in the hips, knees, and spine are likely to be affected.
Research shows that osteoarthritis is the result of repeated minor trauma, significant trauma (traffic accidents, sports injuries), being overweight, and a lack of physical activity. These factors prevent the cartilage from receiving adequate nutrition and lead to abnormal and premature deterioration of the affected joint.
Consequences
Osteoarthritis is a clinical sign of the presence of a subluxation (misalignment or restricted movement of a joint). A subluxation causes a lack of coordination between the nervous system, the muscles, and the joints, leading to pain, muscle tension, and joint stiffness.
The Subluxation will tend to accelerate the progression of degeneration in the affected area (osteoarthritis).
In many cases, there are no obvious symptoms until a trivial activity or a major incident acts as a trigger. As the disease progresses, the symptoms and pain may also become more severe. Over the long term, the joint space may disappear completely, the joint surfaces will become deformed, and osteoarthritis will develop.
The Chiropractic Approach
Chiropractic care helps reduce pain and inflammation. The treatment is designed to re-educate the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems so that they can achieve optimal balance and begin to work in synergy.
Chiropractic care can be effective in slowing the progression of osteoarthritis and preventing the onset of painful episodes. Chiropractic adjustments can restore joint mobility and slow the degenerative process in the affected joints.
Chiropractic care is also designed to correct postural abnormalities. In fact, poor posture leads to misalignment of the joints and, as a result, increased stress and premature joint wear.
Let's not forget that the chiropractic It is based on the following scientific fact: the nervous system controls all the cells, tissues, organs, and systems of the body. A disorder of the nervous system can disrupt the body's overall health and balance.
Chiropractic aims to restore and maintain human health through the interaction of the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems. It focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions that can be influenced by its approach.
Osteoarthritis is not caused solely by aging. It is known that osteoarthritis is also caused by accumulated injuries (falls, minor accidents, poor posture, etc.)… This interferes with the normal movement of certain joints and promotes the development of localized wear and tear.
Chiropractic focuses its philosophy, art, and science on maintaining homeostasis (balance) in the human body and on its innate ability to heal itself naturally. It does not focus solely on symptoms or pain, but rather seeks to identify and treat the underlying problem.
