At the Marc Bony Chiropractic Center in Mataró, we promote chiropractic care as a natural and effective option for children’s health, helping to prevent the over-medicalization of children.
Kids as young as 6 are already using drugs
It's Normal
“The Kids' 99% Spaniards diagnosed and treated with amphetamines (Rubifen, Ritalin, Concerta) due to attention deficit with hyperactivity (ADHD) They aren't actually sick, but rather they have been victims of ‘overdiagnosis‘ committed by society: the psychiatrists who treated them and their own parents, who are demanding the ‘magic pill’ that puts an end to the problems that children may cause”.
This is how forcefully a Europa Press news dispatch begins, attributing these statements to psychiatrist Eglée Iciarte, a professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid. She speaks of the “trivialization of diagnoses” carried out by many professionals in this field, who “treat a symptom as if it were a disease.“.
What is the error?
“This mistake stems from overdiagnosis, the ‘medicalization‘ of life, and an attempt to meet the demands of parents themselves, who are asking for a magic pill to put an end to the problems they and their children face,” according to the expert, who noted that Spain ranks third in the world—behind only the United States and Canada—in the prescription of psychiatric drugs to minors.
The consequence? According to this psychiatrist, when children and adolescents are treated with psychiatric drugs before their personalities and nervous systems are fully developed, they may suffer from conditions ranging from diabetes to growth problems. Furthermore, these hasty diagnoses can lead them to become addicted to drugs in the future or cause them to develop serious psychological problems.
The Europa Press report quotes some statements that we will be addressing here. The spokesperson for the European Humanist Regional Organization, Giorgio Schultze, reports that in Italy, pharmaceutical companies such as Lilly, the manufacturer of Prozac, are “conducting psychological tests in schools where more than 50% of the children are being diagnosed with hyperactivity.“.
“This is an overreaction, and we’re concerned that many children are being treated with psychiatric drugs unnecessarily because their parents are afraid their children will be expelled from school,” says Schultze.
