Temporomandibular Joint

Can a simple yawn cause a cracking sound, pain, or muscle stiffness?

It could be a TMJ problem, which chiropractic care can often help with.

It hurts when you talk, yawn, or chew. The pain may be constant or intermittent, sometimes varying in intensity, but this situation can really drive you crazy.

If you have temporomandibular joint dysfunction—known as TMJ for short—you know exactly how it feels.

The temporomandibular joints are the joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull, just below your ears, and consist of bones, muscles, and nerves. Symptoms of TMJ disorder include a locked jaw (inability to open the mouth), clicking and popping sounds with jaw movement, difficulty chewing, headaches, facial pain, ear pain, and dizziness.

Treatment options may include:

• Rest your jaw, keeping your teeth apart as much as possible to avoid pushing them downward. Soft foods that require less chewing, such as liquids, are recommended. It’s best to avoid gum and hard, crunchy foods (such as hard candies, raw vegetables, and nuts).

• Apply ice or heat—to reduce swelling and pain and relax the muscles.

• Stress management techniques, such as biofeedback and talk therapy, since TMJ is often caused by stress.

• Night guards to prevent teeth grinding and clenching.

• Dental correction for an abnormal bite—orthodontics (braces), dental restorations, and the realignment of bridges and crowns can correct dental abnormalities that contribute to TMJ.

For many people, chiropractic treatment has proven to be helpful in relieving TMJ symptoms. It involves identifying spinal misalignments and restoring movement to normal levels.

We plan a course of treatment that does not rely on medication or surgery to correct your condition. In many cases, we focus on restoring full mobility and take a multidisciplinary approach.
