Top 10 Foods Rich in Potassium
Potassium, the Forgotten Mineral
Like sodium, magnesium, and calcium, potassium is an electrolyte, which means it helps conduct electrical impulses throughout our body and is therefore absolutely essential for our heart and the nervous system to function. Potassium also contributes
- On Fluid Balance
- Acidity-Alkalinity
- Helps build muscle
- It plays a role in carbohydrate metabolism
Do we need any more reasons to take an interest in this healthy mineral?
Sodium and Potassium Balance
Sodium and potassium are interrelated in our bodies, and this relationship must exist a balance between the two; although our kidneys do their best to maintain it, the modern diet has jeopardized that balance, since most processed foods are high in sodium ylow in potassium. One reason for this is that potassium is a highly soluble mineral, so it is easily lost during cooking or processing. For example, Tomato juice—a food that, in its natural state, contains 50 times more potassium than sodium—typically has twice as much sodium as potassium when purchased in a bottle at the supermarket.. Alcohol, caffeine, and sugar potassium levels decrease, as well as intense exercise or sweating and episodes of vomiting or diarrhea. Long-term use of certain medications, such as aspirin, corticosteroids, or laxatives, can also cause it. Among the symptoms One of the early signs of chronic potassium deficiency is
- First of all fatigue
- Muscle weakness
- Slow reflexes
- Dry skin
- Depression
- Mood changes (anxiety)
Benefits
Optimal health requires adequate levels of potassium. It is recommended that we consume twice as much potassium as sodium. The benefits of increasing potassium intake have been demonstrated by clinical and epidemiological studies:
- Lowering blood pressure
- Reduction in Mortality from Cardiovascular Diseases
- Prevention of Diseases
- kidney stones
- Reduced Risk of Osteoporosis
- Cardiac Arrhythmias
- Glucose Intolerance
