Spondylolisthesis Mataro
Definition
It is difficult to say, and even harder to spell, but spondylolisthesis (spon-dih-loh-lis-the-sis) is a spinal condition that occurs when one vertebra slips over another. Sometimes, a defect in the bone itself, called spondylolysis, causes the disease. Generally, this condition occurs in the lumbar region of the spine.
Symptoms
Symptoms include lower back pain, pain in the legs or thighs, muscle spasms, and tightness in the hamstring muscles. There may also be nerve damage. The condition can be present at birth or develop in late childhood or adulthood. It may result from stress on the spine caused by lifting heavy objects, trauma (e.g., sports injuries, gymnastics, football, etc.), or age-related wear and tear on the spine.
Some people with spondylolisthesis have no symptoms at all; the condition is diagnosed from an X-ray. Others may develop a sway, have a protruding abdomen, or develop a shorter torso.
Treatment
The approach used for this condition can vary from “watchful waiting” to something as drastic as fusion surgery.
Age, severity of symptoms, and degree of slippage will play an important role in determining the recommended course of action.
Chiropractic care has produced some very positive results with spondylolisthesis, especially when adjustments are applied to the spinal segments directly above and below the one affected by spondylolisthesis.
So specific adjustment techniques are used directly above the spondylolytic vertebra. One of the main goals of your chiropractic care, in addition to relieving the subluxation, is to strengthen the muscles that support the affected area, which increases spinal flexibility and mobility.
Another goal is to teach how to avoid overloading the back so that a new injury does not occur.
