Subluxations

What patients want to know about subluxations.

Why have I never heard of subluxations?

Perhaps you have never heard of subluxations.

That’s not a problem. Some time ago, you may not have heard of cholesterol, AIDS, or Alzheimer’s disease either.

Just like a musical chord, a subluxation can simultaneously involve bones, nerves, muscles, soft tissues, and degenerative changes. You have over 200 bones in your body. Every time two bones come together in a joint, there can be movement.

Since the joints in your spine are so close to the spinal cord and nerve roots, small variations in their degree of movement can have serious effects.

The distortion of communications between your brain and your body can cause all kinds of health problems. Like a mobile phone that cuts out, a subluxation can interrupt the vital communications between your body and your brain. Since childbirth can be one of its most common causes, smart parents have their newborns checked for possible subluxations. If the vertebrae “get stuck” and do not move properly, they can irritate the delicate nerves.

If a joint moves too much, the vertebrae can put pressure on the neighboring nerve tissues. This can interfere with the “vital force” transmitted through your nervous system, which facilitates communication between your brain and your body.

The result is a complex of vertebral subluxation or simply a subluxation.

Physical trauma, chemical toxins, and emotional stress can cause subluxations.

A subluxation does not only affect the bones and nerves. Muscles can become too tense or weakened. Discs, ligaments, or other connective tissues can become inflamed. Osteophytes or arthritic degeneration can also occur.

Subluxations are serious! However, the most important characteristic of a subluxation is the effect it has on your nervous system. It compromises the way this system controls and regulates your body, and this can have serious consequences.

The distortion of communications between your brain and your body can cause all kinds of health problems, beyond simple headaches and back pain.

Your chiropractor is the only licensed health professional dedicated to the detection, reduction, and prevention of vertebral subluxations. You are in good hands! How does a person come to have subluxations?

Subluxations have three basic causes. Physical causes include slips or falls, accidents, repetitive movements, and lifting objects. Emotional causes include stress, grief, and fear.

Chemical causes include alcohol, drugs, pollution, and poor nutrition. How can I know if I have a subluxation? You can have them even without knowing it. Just like cavities or cancer, subluxations can be present before a warning sign appears.

A thorough examination can reveal the position and severity of any subluxation you may have. Can subluxations heal on their own? Sometimes, yes. The stresses of modern life are a constant cause of subluxations.

Fortunately, our bodies have the ability to self-correct many of these minor issues when we bend, stretch, or while we sleep at night. When they do not heal, you need a chiropractor! Can children have subluxations?

The first subluxation was likely caused by childbirth. Even “modern” methods of childbirth can exert severe pressure on the baby’s spine. Lack of appetite, unexplained crying, and insomnia can be symptoms of spinal subluxations.
