Studies with a Future
I am part of a fascinating profession. I work with my hands and have the opportunity to meet new people every day and help them find a level of health that many of them would never have dared to imagine.
I am a chiropractor. Have you or your children ever thought about studying chiropractic?
History
Since its inception back in 1895, chiropractic has continued to grow and today has become the largest healthcare profession in the world.
Europe is on the brink of a change in healthcare; people are increasingly opting for a more natural approach to caring for their health, choosing prevention over healing through external or chemical factors to which the body invariably reacts.
Chiropractic is leading this shift towards wellness. Based on the body’s innate ability to regenerate and regulate itself, chiropractic employs non-invasive techniques rather than drugs or surgery to optimize the body’s potential to be healthy.
The chiropractor focuses on eliminating the interference caused by incorrectly aligned vertebrae that, in turn, cause long-term health problems. It is a physical, non-sedentary job, and the vast majority of chiropractors are their own bosses.
My Healing
In my case, I encountered chiropractic when I was 17 years old, about to start a career in medicine. The way of viewing health and how to care for it was dramatically different from what I imagined health to be. You feel bad, you take something, and you’re fine.
Until my chiropractor asked me two questions that would change the course of my studies and my life.
If pain is something bad, why does childbirth hurt so much? Then came the other: Have you ever thought about studying chiropractic?
The Creation of the School
Years later, during a chiropractic seminar, my colleague and friend Adrian Wenban, now director of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic, posed a challenge to a group of colleagues: to create a chiropractic university in Barcelona.
We all got to work, first gathering the necessary funds to make this dream a reality and then negotiating agreements with universities willing to support our initiative.
There was success: today the BCC is part of Pompeu Fabra University, the number one university in Spain, and number 200 worldwide.
Then we secured cooperation from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the number two national university, and number 204 worldwide. Our joint effort has allowed us to have a university in the heart of Barcelona, from where our first group of new colleagues will graduate in two years.
It may seem strange that a group of professionals invests so much time and effort in creating a university that will soon graduate our competitors. But no: today there are 240 chiropractors across the country, one for every 370,000 inhabitants.
In the U.S., where the profession was born, there is one chiropractor for every 3,500 people. We need more people! There is high demand and low supply.
A Bright Future
It turns out that chiropractic has a bright future. A recent study by Fast Magazine considers chiropractic one of the top 10 jobs in the U.S. today.
Additional information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the profession will experience a 20% growth between 2008 and 2018. Chiropractic has a bright future, and being part of it is simple.
BCC students are an international group of energetic young people. They attend classes in English and Spanish, as much literature on the profession is written in English.
Prospective students at BCC must have knowledge of basic sciences, biology, and chemistry, and have proficiency in both Spanish and English.
From there, the professionals who created BCC have developed a specific curriculum based on our experience with the goal of creating professionals who will meet the daily health needs of people who are increasingly seeking alternative ways to care for themselves, beyond the traditional.
I am part of a fascinating profession. Have you ever thought about studying chiropractic?
