Why do children have headaches? Treatment at Mataro Chiropractic1

Our examination is designed to uncover the three possible causes of your child’s headaches: physical, chemical, or emotional problems.

Does your child frequently complain of headaches?

Headaches can be common, but they are not normal. The problem with headaches in children, however, is that it can be more difficult to diagnose in terms of cause and effect. This is especially true for younger children, as they often lack the verbal skills or experience to effectively communicate what is wrong or what they are feeling.

Tension headaches

are the most common type of headache in children (just like in adults) and generally account for around 75% of all childhood headaches. Episodic tension headaches occur several times a month, while chronic tension headaches are much more frequent – occurring more than 15 times in a month. Recent studies seem to point to a genetic relationship with these types of headaches, where previously it was thought there was none. Triggers can include lack of sleep, tension at home or in the school environment, or secondarily cigarette smoke, skipping meals, poor nutrition, vision problems, and bright lights.

Migraine headaches,

although less frequent, also affect children, and if one of the parents suffers from migraines, their child has a 50% higher propensity to experience them as well. In other words, in 70% to 90% of all children with migraines, there is also a family history of migraines. Migraine triggers include foods such as chocolate and caffeine, lack of sleep, skipping meals, and, especially in females, hormonal changes.

Children’s headaches can also be caused by ear and chronic sinusitis, the onset of menstruation, vision problems, sore throat, or fever. While most parents seek products to relieve their child’s pain, this approach can produce certain undesirable side effects and rebound effects, even triggering them.

There are many drug-free alternatives to address children’s headaches. Naturally, we believe that a thorough chiropractic examination is the best way to start. We will conduct a comprehensive investigation to identify triggers and identify and reduce any nerve interference from the upper spine that may be involved. Locating and correcting a vertebral subluxation in our younger patients has often been successful in alleviating the pain, frequency, and duration of headaches in a relatively short time.

A simple solution that is easily within your reach – give us a call if your child is experiencing frequent headaches.
