Less Risks with Chiropractic

According to a study, the risk of injury with Chiropractic is 76% lower compared to Primary Medical care.

Less Risks

A study published in the medical journal Spine on December 9, 2014, showed that among individuals benefiting from the medical assistance program, a visit to the chiropractor was much safer than a visit to the primary care physician. A second study published by Hindawi on December 25, 2014, demonstrated that there was no evidence of injury following chiropractic adjustments.

In the study published in Spine, researchers reviewed the records of individuals benefiting from the medical assistance program who had received chiropractic care in 2007, looking for reports of injuries.

Specifically, they reviewed records of “… older adults with a neuromusculoskeletal complaint, to assess the risk of injury to the head, neck, or trunk after a visit to the office for a specific chiropractic spinal adjustment, compared to visits to the office for an evaluation by a primary care physician.”

The results of this study clearly indicated that a visit to the chiropractor, who performed an adjustment, was safer than a visit to their physician for an evaluation. The study did not account for the potential increased risk of any form of medical treatment or medications as the medical comparison was only made in “…those evaluated by a primary care physician.”

The study examined records up to seven days after the visit to the chiropractor or the physician. When calculating the risk of injuries for both the medical visit and the chiropractic visit, the researchers reported that “The cumulative probability of injuries in the chiropractic group was 40 injury incidents per 100,000 people, compared to 153 cases per 100,000 people in the primary care group.”

So let’s get to work

This demonstrates that despite not having any form of healthcare, chiropractic was much safer with only a small risk.

In their conclusions, the authors wrote: “Among beneficiaries of the medical assistance program aged 66-99 with an exposure to a visit to the office for a neuromusculoskeletal problem, the risk of injury to the head, neck, or trunk within 7 days was 76% lower among subjects who visited the chiropractic office, compared to those who saw a primary care physician.”

In the second study published by researchers from Hindawi, they conducted a “randomized controlled trial” to look at blood function after chiropractic adjustments, to see if there were any chemical changes that would normally be present after a spinal cord injury. They compared these results with a controlled group that received a placebo or sham adjustments.

The results did not show indications of an increase in the levels of any chemicals that would have been present if the subjects had been injured. Based on these results, the researchers concluded: “Our data do not show changes in any of the studied damage markers.

Although this study examined the results in a symptomatic population, the specific chiropractic adjustment techniques in the upper cervical and thoracic regions appeared to be safe techniques that did not cause any harm to the subject’s health. This data can be used as evidence of the safe application of specific spinal adjustments for healthy subjects.
