ADHD – Neurodevelopmental Issues

Improved with Chiropractic Care

Children with Neurological Disorders and Chiropractic Care

On June 16, 2016, the Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health Journal published and documented several cases of the positive effects of chiropractic care on eight children with special care needs.

The authors of the study report that the number of children needing special care is alarmingly increasing. “Every year, more children are diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder.”

The study reports that the autism rate in 1975 was 1 in 5000, and by 2008 it had increased to 1 in 88.

The ADHD rate has increased by 16 percent since 2007 to today, with current estimates showing that around 10 percent of children aged 4 to 17 are being diagnosed with these disorders.

The number of children enrolled in special education programs has increased by 30 percent in the last 10 years, and currently, 13 percent of all school-aged children are in these programs.

In this research, eight children with a variety of special needs were studied to see the outcomes of chiropractic care. Four of the children were seen in a university chiropractic clinic, and four were treated in the private practice of one of the study’s authors.

Each of the children received chiropractic care through the correction of subluxations. Each of the eight children showed improvement in their respective neurological issues.

This study included an 11-year-old girl who had difficulties with reading comprehension, writing, and math. After receiving chiropractic care, this girl was selected for the high-performance educational program at her school.

Two sisters, aged two and four, suffered from anxiety and speech delays. After receiving chiropractic care, the study documents that the two-year-old had improved to the point where she can now attend daycare, and the four-year-old no longer needed speech therapy and was accepted into a prestigious preschool program.

The authors noted in the conclusion of their study: “Seven out of eight children showed a drastic improvement; reducing or eliminating one or more of the special services that had been part of their weekly therapy.” A child with cerebral palsy showed good improvement, but his limitations prevented significant improvements from being observed compared to the other children in this study.
