Allergies and Chiropractic

What is an allergy?

An allergy is an exaggerated immune reaction to substances that are normally harmless. The substance to which one is allergic is called an “allergen”, and the symptoms caused are defined as “allergic reactions”. (Allergies and Chiropractic)

When we are allergic to something, the immune system falsely believes that this substance is dangerous to the body. In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system produces IgE antibodies for this allergen.

These antibodies cause some cells in the body to release chemical mediators into the blood; one of them is histamine. Histamine acts on the eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal system and causes the typical symptoms of an allergic reaction. Future exposures to the same allergen will trigger the antibody response again.

This means that every time you come into contact with the allergen, you will have an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions can be mild, such as a runny nose, or severe, such as difficulty breathing. Asthma attacks, for example, are often allergic reactions to something inhaled by a susceptible person.

Some types of allergies produce various symptoms, and in rare cases, an allergic reaction can be very severe – this reaction is called anaphylaxis. The associated symptoms are difficulty breathing and swallowing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or other parts of the body, dizziness, or loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis is rare and usually occurs moments after exposure to an allergen.

The Innate and the Acquired/Allergies and Chiropractic

Since the beginning of conventional or allopathic medicine, we have heard that the cause of any health problem, any disease or discomfort, comes from outside. This ancient concept states that external factors such as parasites, microbes, germs, bacteria, chemicals, or others enter the body and change its functions.

The approach has always been this: “The cause comes from outside and affects the inside.” Therefore, in an attempt to eliminate the enemy, conventional medicine continues to seek an external solution. This means that every solution offered by traditional medicine is meticulously invasive (such as medications, vaccines, injections…), and then administered to modify, annihilate, dominate, stimulate, or inhibit the disease.

But this principle is already obsolete!

Think about your children. They spend days at school or daycare with many other children of the same age. Once in a while, there will be some microbes “floating” in the air. Some children will get sick, and others will not. Does this mean that the microbe only attacks the children it likes?

Or do these children not have strong enough defenses, in which case it means that the problem comes from WITHIN, from a malfunction of the immune system? That is the chiropractic philosophy.

Since its inception in 1895, Chiropractic proclaims that the cause of any disease or discomfort is WITHIN the body, stemming from an internal imbalance, from an abnormal function of organs or systems, which leads to a maladaptation to external factors.

Therefore, healing must come FROM WITHIN to the OUTSIDE!! If we restore internal balance, the body regains 100% of its adaptive powers and can heal itself

Therefore, healing must come FROM WITHIN to the OUTSIDE!! If we restore internal balance, the body regains 100% of its adaptive powers and can heal itself. In the case of allergies, once again traditional medicine will advise staying away from allergens.

When this is not possible, it will prescribe various medications such as antihistamines, corticosteroids, or cromolyns that will act on the H1 receptors, preventing the effects of histamine, thereby alleviating the main symptoms of the allergy, such as

sneezing,

conjunctivitis,

runny nose…

For the doctor of chiropractic, action must be taken on the nervous system, the chief system that controls and coordinates all the functions of the body.

An interference at the level of the nervous system or subluxation affects the immune system, resulting in a loss of the body’s ability to fight against allergens. Chiropractic adjustments eliminate subluxations, restoring internal balance so that the body can heal itself. With Chiropractic, healing comes from the inside out. Allergies and Chiropractic are a good combination.

A comparative study of the health status of children under chiropractic care and those under allopathic care concludes that

96.5% of children under chiropractic care do not have asthma

compared to 95% in children under allopathic or conventional medical care. Thus, the immune system of children who have grown up with regular spinal adjustments is more capable of fighting against allergens.

(J Chiro Res 1989; 5:101-3 In a study published in Today’s Chiropractic November/December 2000, 47 patients with persistent asthma due to allergies were observed over 2 years. The care administered consisted of specific spinal adjustments. Most started with 3 visits weekly.)

The results were positive for ALL patients. Improvement was noted with relief of symptoms and a decrease in the use of medications for asthma attacks. Also, ALL reported maintenance of their improvement 2 years after the study! www.quiropractica1.com
