Chiropractic and Multiple Sclerosis

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

It is a chronic, potentially debilitating disease that affects the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. It affects more than a million people, is unpredictable, and varies in severity, ranging from mild discomfort in some patients to permanent disability in others.

Your Central Nervous System contains millions of nerve fibers that carry electrical impulses from your brain and brainstem to almost all the tissues, organs, and cells in your body.

Multiple Sclerosis and Physical Trauma

Some research suggests that trauma to the cervical spine may exacerbate patients with Multiple Sclerosis. These injuries can trigger critical changes in the Central Nervous System and lead to the onset of the disease.

Dr. Charles Poser from Harvard Medical School published an article titled: Trauma to the Central Nervous System may result in the formation or growth of Multiple Sclerosis Plaques. These studies demonstrate that trauma is undoubtedly related to the worsening or onset of the disease. However, in this particular situation, the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis may take days, months, or even years to develop.

Chiropractic and Multiple Sclerosis

Some of the most innovative and relevant studies in upper cervical care have demonstrated the relationship between Multiple Sclerosis and the upper cervical spine. Although cervical care is not considered a cure for those affected by the disease, these studies support its benefits for those suffering from this debilitating condition.

According to medical studies, injuries to the head and neck have long been considered a possible cause of Multiple Sclerosis. But this is the first research that shows that correcting such injuries can have a significant impact on reducing the disease.
