Chiropractic and Depression

    What is Depression?

It is a mood disorder, whether from the perspective of psychology or from the perspective of psychiatry, but always within the realm of psychopathology. According to the medical model, psychiatry describes it as a mood disorder, and its usual symptom is a state of dejection and unhappiness that can be transient or permanent.

The common treatment, regardless of whether a diagnosis of the type of depressive disorder is reached, is considered appropriate if the mood situation imposes a limitation on the patient’s usual activities or a decrease in their functional capacity in any of their spheres. The aim of treatment is to improve the mood situation, as well as restore adequate functioning of social and work capacities and generally improve the patient’s quality of life, reducing morbidity and mortality, and thus preventing possible relapses.

The selection of treatment will depend on the results of the evaluation. There is a wide variety of antidepressant medications and psychotherapies that can be used to treat depressive disorders.

Psychiatrists have the competence to prescribe medications. Psychologists have the competence in psychotherapy or other forms of psychotherapeutic intervention such as behavior modification and behavioral therapy.

    Chiropractic and Depression

Every emotion is represented in the body by a chemistry. The chemistry produced is a reaction of the physical body to a mental idea. This chemical production is what the person experiences as emotions. The system archives the emotion in the chemical processes that affect all tissue, somatization.

Chiropractic releases this somatization to stop the vicious cycle and helps the person get out of the black hole that keeps them depressed.

The communication between the mind and the body is two-way, meaning the mind affects the body and the body affects the mind. A persistent emotional state creates patterns through neurochemical information pathways. The ability to undo these patterns in the body greatly helps to eliminate the symptoms of depression and can significantly shorten the time the patient is under treatment.

With improvement, the person can, under the supervision of their doctor, reduce and in many cases eliminate the medication, because the patterns are reduced or eliminated, and then relapses are usually not common.
