A group of Spanish researchers has made this finding using advanced neuroimaging techniques.
They have studied the cerebral cortex, the white matter nerve fibers, and the connection patterns between different brain areas. With this technique, they have been able to see changes that could not be appreciated with magnetic resonance imaging.
The researchers conclude that:
We have demonstrated that there are changes at the brain level and in the pathways of communication of brain signals that manifest mainly as cortical atrophy and damage in the sensory and motor cortex.
