Intestine Your second brain

Intestino Tu segundo cerebro

The Brain in Your Gut

Did you know that you have a “second brain” in your gut?

It may surprise many to know that they have an enteric nervous system. Have you heard about this? Well… it controls and regulates the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon and has five times more neurons than the spinal cord.

You have probably heard the warning “Death begins in the colon.” It turns out to be wise advice. If we have a poorly maintained digestive tract, populated with opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria and fungi (in particular, Candida albicans) and contaminated by poorly digested food, we run the risk of being clogged with toxic matter. This situation can lead to imbalances and disorders of varying severity.

If you have ever felt butterflies in your stomach, or a hunch, or felt that crab cakes are “revolting your stomach,” you may have heard your “second brain” in your gut.

Have you ever vomited?

Then you have experienced the wisdom of your enteric nervous system firsthand.

You may not have felt well, but the intelligence of your nervous system turned those crab cakes into projectiles, producing the necessary contractions to force them back up your esophagus. A healthy response for you despite not feeling well at that moment.

It is also known that the enteric nervous system plays an important role in our emotional well-being. It connects with the brain, directly affecting feelings of sadness or stress, even influencing memory, learning, and decision-making.

The cells in the gut produce 80% of the good mood hormone (serotonin) found in the body. Therefore, it should be noted that a “sick” gut is also a triggering factor for emotional disorders.

Many gastrointestinal disorders such as acid reflux, colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome begin with the brain in the gut.

Do you know someone who should see us to better balance their enteric nervous system?
