Scientific Research in Chiropractic
For over 100 years, chiropractic has produced good results in a wide variety of health problems. Today, millions of patients have benefited from this innovative treatment. This success has attracted the attention of more and more researchers who want to better evaluate the role of chiropractic in the field of health.
Health policy makers are compelled, due to demographic and economic reasons among others, to rationalize health policy based on the efficiency of health services versus their cost.
Thus, the most important studies have been carried out by government agencies or independent research centers funded by governments.
They gather multidisciplinary panels from various branches of health and even economists who assess the economic impact of the results, so we are talking about completely independent studies.
Proven Effectiveness
In terms of the spine, chiropractic treatment, having not originated within the realms of traditional medicine, has had to demonstrate its effectiveness and safety by undergoing more clinical studies and conducting more research than any other branch of health in the field of spinal conditions. Therefore, it has a greater body of scientific evidence than other treatments.
Given the growing importance of musculoskeletal problems of the spine in Western society, research in this field is growing exponentially year after year, further consolidating chiropractic’s leading role in this area.
As early as 1993, the British Medical Association (BMA) cited the chiropractic profession as “the best example of a new profession conducting high-quality clinical research to establish its safety and effectiveness”. * (Complementary Medicine: New Approaches to Good Practice. Oxford, England: British Medical Association, Oxford University Press. 1993; 138.)”
Due to the lack of information on this fact in Spain, some of these studies on efficacy, safety, and cost compared to other conventional treatments are summarized below.
Only those that are independent of the chiropractic profession have been selected, that is, conducted by governments, independent research agencies, and medical researchers published in medical journals.
Many of these studies were commissioned by governments and serve to regulate health professions in various countries for the benefit of their citizens.
These included chiropractic in their health systems after observing its benefits in both efficacy and costs for the government. In this regard, legislation in Spain is outdated and antiquated.
Status Quo
As of today, in the 21st century, legislation in Spain has not yet been updated to regulate the chiropractic profession and take advantage of the enormous health and economic resource it has proven to be for other countries.
