Do neck braces really help? Find out here.

The use of neck braces is common after neck injuries, but is it really effective? At the Chiropractic Center Marc Bony in Mataró, we explore natural alternatives for cervical well-being.
Do neck braces help the neck?
Who hasn’t seen someone wearing a neck brace? – those bulky rigid collars that keep the head upright, preventing it from moving.
Generally, people use them after a car accident, a sports injury or a fall, due to “whiplash” or a soft tissue injury in the neck. They look uncomfortable. But more and more of us are wondering if they should really be used!
Many believe that short-term use of a soft cervical collar can be beneficial in the acute initial phase of an injury. However, continued use causes the muscles in the neck to weaken because the collar actually takes over the function of the muscles.
Some studies have shown that the use of a cervical collar can actually prolong the recovery process.
So, how should a neck injury be treated?
- Come in for a check-up with your chiropractor! When the spine functions properly, the muscles and joint function are restored. The longer you wait, the longer the recovery time.
- Try to maintain the neck in its normal movement as much as possible, as this helps to maintain muscle function.
- If you are in favor of using a cervical collar, limit its use to less than a week.
- Performing stretching exercises helps the neck muscles and joints.
- Continue with your normal daily routine and activities.
Cervical whiplash injuries can also affect the normal curve in the neck. A chiropractic examination can determine the extent of the damage, while pain relievers and muscle relaxants may temporarily make you feel better, but they do not heal the injury to the ligaments, muscles, and tendons. A cervical collar CANNOT restore the natural forward curve of the neck.
