Your Health Your Efforts
“A consistent man believes in destiny, a capricious man in chance.”
Benjamin Disraeli
It is interesting to look at the history of some ideas about health and disease.
Witchcraft
In the 17th century, many believed that diseases were the result of being possessed by evil spirits and that the necessary treatment was exorcism, to free the victim from the invader.
Bacteriology
Then, in the late 19th century, bacteriology became the main model for understanding disease. After the discovery of penicillin in the early 20th century by Alexander Fleming, people became excited about the idea that most diseases had an infectious cause by nature and that substances capable of killing germs should be prescribed as treatment. (1) Even today, many continue to believe that the only way to ensure the survival of the human race is to declare war on the microbes that surround us. We are a society obsessed with antibacterial cloths, sprays, toothpaste, and soaps.
However, the truth is that we have been symbolically coexisting with bacteria for millions of years, and in fact, they cause us few problems. Each of us carries more bacterial cells in our bodies than there are people on the planet. In fact, in many cases, they are essential for survival. (2) We know that the misuse of antibiotics has accelerated the evolution of bacteria over thousands of years, resulting in a new generation immune to medications. (3)
Genetics
Currently, modern medicine has entered the era of genetics. During this century, a gene will be discovered for practically every imaginable disease and behavior. From being a thief, a drug addict, obese, or violent, to being prone to develop cancer. (4-5) The fundamental belief within the field of genetics is that whoever the person is, their behavior and health are predetermined by what their genes carry.
You may have noticed that all the theories described have a common foundation, that they lack common sense. The reasoning is very clear: health is determined by a series of factors that are beyond our reach, factors that come from the outside, and outside our sphere of responsibilities. (for what to do something)
Change
However, the truth is that health will reach its highest level when, like life, we take responsibility for it.
For the vast majority of us, the state of our health is the product of the accumulation over many years of the factors of our lifestyle, both good and bad.
These lifestyle-related factors range from our diet, our attitude towards our work, stress levels, exercise, our posture, our family, and personal relationships. (6) A fascinating study conducted in California over 20 years demonstrated that the most widespread diseases among “the first world” (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and arthritis) could be directly related to the factors of our lifestyle. (7-8)
I Don’t Want to Be Responsible Heal Me
Most people are intimidated by the idea of taking responsibility for their health. However, the truth is that we have the opportunity to control and actively pursue our well-being.
Many of us have the idea that drastic changes are necessary to achieve a healthy state of living. However, research has shown that when maintained, small changes over a long period of time are extremely beneficial.
For example, one study found that people who committed to exercising for just 5 minutes a day significantly reduced their blood pressure and the risk of developing coronary diseases. (9)
It will be more beneficial for you to believe that health comes from within, and that you are an inseparable part of your physical, social, and cultural environment. And finally, accepting responsibility for learning and actions related to your health will constitute the best guide to achieving a full life full of surprises.
