Eve Van Cauter, directora del Centro del Sue\u00f1o, Metabolismo y Salud de la Universidad de Chicago (EE. UU.), indican que dormir menos de seis horas al d\u00eda puede disminuir significativamente la capacidad de reacci\u00f3n, generar problemas cognitivos e incluso dificultar la toma de decisiones racionales.<\/p>\n<p>Dormir no es simplemente descansar. Durante el sue\u00f1o se llevan a cabo procesos biol\u00f3gicos esenciales para la recuperaci\u00f3n f\u00edsica, la consolidaci\u00f3n de la memoria, el equilibrio hormonal y el correcto funcionamiento del sistema inmunol\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Efectos de dormir poco<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Seg\u00fan las investigaciones, dormir menos de seis horas cada noche puede aumentar el riesgo de sufrir diversos problemas de salud, entre ellos:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Envejecimiento prematuro del coraz\u00f3n.<\/li>\n<li>Resistencia a la insulina.<\/li>\n<li>Presi\u00f3n arterial alta.<\/li>\n<li>Mayor riesgo de demencia severa o enfermedad de Alzheimer.<\/li>\n<li>Psicosis y alteraciones de la salud mental.<\/li>\n<li>Falta de concentraci\u00f3n.<\/li>\n<li>Disminuci\u00f3n de la productividad.<\/li>\n<li>Acumulaci\u00f3n de toxinas en la sangre.<\/li>\n<li>Disfunci\u00f3n del sistema inmunol\u00f3gico.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>La cantidad ideal de sue\u00f1o para un adulto suele situarse entre 6 y 9 horas por noche, aunque las necesidades individuales pueden variar ligeramente de una persona a otra.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lo que ocurre cuando dormimos<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>El documental <em>Science of Sleep<\/em> de National Geographic (2015) present\u00f3 investigaciones realizadas durante la d\u00e9cada de 1980 que demostraron que la privaci\u00f3n total del sue\u00f1o durante 17 d\u00edas consecutivos provocaba la muerte de ratones de laboratorio.<\/p>\n<p>Este hallazgo pone de manifiesto que el sue\u00f1o es una necesidad biol\u00f3gica tan importante como la alimentaci\u00f3n o la hidrataci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<h2>Estudios sobre la falta de sue\u00f1o<\/h2>\n<p>La somnolencia tiene consecuencias que van mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del cansancio diario.<\/p>\n<p>Durante el a\u00f1o 2013, en Estados Unidos, los conductores somnolientos provocaron aproximadamente 72.000 accidentes de tr\u00e1fico, causando la muerte de 800 personas y dejando m\u00e1s de 44.000 heridos. Estas cifras superaron incluso las relacionadas con los accidentes provocados por conductores distra\u00eddos por mensajes de texto o bajo los efectos del alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Adem\u00e1s, diversas encuestas reflejan una preocupante realidad:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>El 63 % de las personas no duerme lo suficiente para mantener una salud \u00f3ptima.<\/li>\n<li>El 69 % experimenta problemas frecuentes relacionados con el sue\u00f1o.<\/li>\n<li>El 22 % sufre somnolencia diurna que afecta negativamente su calidad de vida y rendimiento laboral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>El motivo m\u00e1s se\u00f1alado por los encuestados fue que simplemente ignoraban las se\u00f1ales de cansancio para poder completar tareas o responsabilidades pendientes.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Las etapas del sue\u00f1o saludable<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>El sue\u00f1o se compone de varias fases, cada una con funciones espec\u00edficas e indispensables para la salud.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Etapas 1 y 2: Sue\u00f1o ligero (No REM)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Durante estas primeras fases, los procesos biol\u00f3gicos del cuerpo comienzan a ralentizarse. Sin embargo, el cerebro permanece activo iniciando procesos relacionados con la memoria y el aprendizaje.<\/p>\n<p>En esta etapa, el cerebro comienza a decidir qu\u00e9 recuerdos y experiencias se conservar\u00e1n y cu\u00e1les ser\u00e1n descartados.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Etapas 3 y 4: Sue\u00f1o profundo (No REM)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Estas fases corresponden al sue\u00f1o profundo y reparador.<\/p>\n<p>Durante este per\u00edodo tienen lugar importantes procesos fisiol\u00f3gicos de limpieza y desintoxicaci\u00f3n cerebral. El l\u00edquido cefalorraqu\u00eddeo ayuda a eliminar residuos metab\u00f3licos acumulados durante el d\u00eda, contribuyendo al mantenimiento de la salud cerebral.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Etapa 5: Sue\u00f1o REM<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>La fase REM (Rapid Eye Movement o Movimiento R\u00e1pido de los Ojos) es el momento en que se producen la mayor\u00eda de los sue\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Durante esta etapa, la actividad cerebral es muy similar a la que existe cuando estamos despiertos. Sin embargo, el cuerpo permanece temporalmente paralizado para evitar que representemos f\u00edsicamente nuestros sue\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Algunas personas experimentan ocasionalmente un fen\u00f3meno conocido como par\u00e1lisis del sue\u00f1o, una experiencia que puede resultar inquietante debido a la incapacidad temporal para mover el cuerpo al despertar.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan se explica en el documental <em>Science of Sleep<\/em>, el mejor tratamiento para este fen\u00f3meno es comprender qu\u00e9 est\u00e1 ocurriendo. Saber que se trata de un episodio temporal y benigno permite afrontarlo con tranquilidad, ya que normalmente desaparece en pocos minutos.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>El impacto econ\u00f3mico de la falta de sue\u00f1o<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>La privaci\u00f3n del sue\u00f1o no solo afecta a la salud individual, sino tambi\u00e9n a la econom\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>Se estima que los accidentes y la p\u00e9rdida de productividad relacionados con la falta de sue\u00f1o generan un coste anual de aproximadamente 411.000 millones de d\u00f3lares en Estados Unidos y Europa, una cifra equivalente a cerca del 2,28 % de su Producto Interior Bruto (PIB).<\/p>\n<p>Adem\u00e1s, se calcula que se pierden alrededor de 1,2 millones de d\u00edas de trabajo cada a\u00f1o debido a problemas relacionados con el sue\u00f1o insuficiente.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>La influencia de la gen\u00e9tica, el jet lag y las hormonas del estr\u00e9s<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>La calidad del sue\u00f1o tambi\u00e9n puede verse afectada por factores gen\u00e9ticos y ambientales.<\/p>\n<p>Uno de los ejemplos m\u00e1s conocidos es el jet lag, tambi\u00e9n denominado s\u00edndrome de cambio de zona horaria o desincronosis. Este trastorno aparece cuando los viajes a trav\u00e9s de diferentes husos horarios alteran el reloj biol\u00f3gico interno del organismo.<\/p>\n<p>Entre sus s\u00edntomas m\u00e1s frecuentes se encuentran:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Somnolencia durante el d\u00eda.<\/li>\n<li>Fatiga y letargo.<\/li>\n<li>Insomnio nocturno.<\/li>\n<li>Irritabilidad.<\/li>\n<li>Confusi\u00f3n.<\/li>\n<li>Dificultad para concentrarse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Por otro lado, los investigadores han descubierto que algunas personas presentan un trastorno hereditario denominado s\u00edndrome de fase avanzada del sue\u00f1o familiar. En estos casos, el reloj biol\u00f3gico interno funciona aproximadamente tres horas m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido de lo habitual, alterando significativamente los horarios naturales de sue\u00f1o y vigilia.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>La importancia de cuidar tu descanso<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Dormir bien no es un lujo, sino una necesidad biol\u00f3gica fundamental.
