She told me that both her grandmother and her mother had suffered from dementia in the final years of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abThis runs in my side of the family, and I'm worried it's going to happen to me!\u00bb she said.<\/p>\n<p>I explained to her that just because her mother had this problem doesn't mean it will happen to her.<\/p>\n<p>His response? \u00abBut it\u2019s in my genes!\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>And I told her the story of two 90-year-old women who were identical twins\u2014that is, the women had identical genes. One woman lived in a nursing home; she suffered from dementia, had cataracts, and was confined to a wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p>Her sister, however, was still living at home; she was as mentally strong as ever and continued to lead an active life.<\/p>\n<p>Why did these two women with the same genes end up in different places?
