THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: Recognition of the self and the non-self

Sistema Inmunitario, protección natural

The human immune system can be defined as a general system of the organism intended to safeguard the biological identity of each individual. This definition differs, in part, from the commonly held idea of it being identified as the “defense system.” However, the definition presented at the beginning needs to be explained in a bit more detail so that the complexity and great importance of this system can be understood in order for us to maintain a healthy situation regularly.

But how does the immune system work in humans? The detailed study of the immune system is enormously complex, and although there are still many unknowns to resolve, extraordinary and lasting progress has been made in the understanding of immunity over the last fifty years.

We will try to explain it in an easy way, and to make it a bit more enjoyable and comprehensible, we could compare the immune system to the army of a sovereign state. This state (our organism) needs to have defensive mechanisms that protect it from possible foreign invasions that could annihilate it. For this, it needs a well-organized army that allows it to know when an invasion occurs, that is, to have an intelligence service that immediately discovers when the entry of foreign elements occurs and communicates it to the army’s general staff so that they can plan how to repel the aggression and transmit the relevant orders to the various attack units, equipped with weapons and ammunition capable of destroying the invader.
