Osteoarthritis and Chiropractic
Did you know that osteoarthritis affects one in every four people and the average age is under 40 years?
It affects both men and women equally and can appear at any age?
Context
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common degenerative joint diseases. It is characterized by the degeneration and wear of one or more joints. The tissue that covers the joint surfaces, cartilage, becomes thinner and eventually cracks over time.
The stress on the joint increases as the cartilage disappears. The joints of the hips, knees, and spine are likely to be affected.
Research shows that osteoarthritis is the result of repeated minor trauma, significant impacts (traffic accidents, sports), excess weight, and lack of physical activity. These factors hinder the proper nutrition of the cartilage and produce abnormal and premature deterioration of the affected joint.
Consequences
Osteoarthritis is a clinical sign of the presence of a subluxation (misalignment or poor movement of a joint). The subluxation causes a lack of coordination between the Nervous System, muscles, and joints, resulting in pain, muscle tension, and stiffness in the joints.
The Subluxation will tend to favor the progression of degeneration in the affected area (osteoarthritis).
In many cases, there are no obvious symptoms until a trivial activity or a significant incident acts as a triggering factor. As the disease progresses, symptoms and pain may also become more significant. In the long term, the joint space may completely disappear, and the joint surfaces will undergo deformation, leading to osteoarthritis.
The Chiropractic Approach
Chiropractic care helps reduce pain and inflammation. The care aims to re-educate the Nervous, Muscular, and Skeletal Systems to find optimal balance and begin to work in synergy.
Chiropractic care can be effective in decreasing the progression of osteoarthritis and preventing the occurrence of painful episodes. Chiropractic adjustments can restore joint movement and delay the degenerative process in the affected joints.
Chiropractic care is also designed to correct postural anomalies. In fact, poor posture leads to poor alignment of the joints and, consequently, increased stress and premature joint wear.
Let us not forget that chiropractic is based on the following scientific fact: the nervous system exerts control over all cells, tissues, organs, and systems of the body. A disorder of the nervous system can cause problems at the level of the body’s health balance.
Chiropractic aims for the recovery and maintenance of human health through the interaction of the Nervous, Muscular, and Skeletal Systems. It focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases in which it can influence through its approach.
Osteoarthritis is not solely due to age. It is known that osteoarthritis is also caused by accumulated injuries (falls, minor accidents, poor postures, etc.)… This interferes with the normal movements of certain joints and promotes the development of localized wear.
Chiropractic focuses its philosophy, art, and science on maintaining homeostasis (balance) of the human body and its innate ability to heal naturally. It does not only focus on symptoms or pain but seeks to identify and treat the underlying problem.
Health Questionnaire
Do you feel stiffness when getting up or after a period of inactivity? No
Does the pain disappear after a few minutes of activity? No
When you move, do you hear a rubbing or cracking sound? No
Do you have deformities in your joints? No
Do you feel a decrease in your range of motion? No
Have you ever experienced episodes of joint inflammation, with redness of the soft tissues? No
Have you ever suffered trauma, falls, and/or car accidents? Yes No Does your posture leave much to be desired? No
