Headache

Dolor de Cabeza

Did you know that.. a headache can be a symptom of a problem in your cervical spine?

The cervical spine, that is, the upper part of the seven vertebrae, is surely among the least appreciated and most vital parts of our body. Its 37 separate joints allow the head and neck to move over the torso while constantly obeying orders from the senses and reflex mechanisms.

Look at it this way: the cervical spine faithfully supports our heavy heads for 14 to 16 hours a day. This is not easy. First of all, the head is far from being evenly balanced on top of our spine.

In fact, it is tilted forward; without the cervical muscles, it would fall onto our chest.
Secondly, the weight of the head can become unbearable over time. (If you want a clearer picture, try this experiment: hold a bowling ball with your elbow on a table for as long as you can. Few people can maintain this for more than an hour).

This means that the cervical spine is a vital part of almost all our daily activities, such as talking, gesturing, sitting, standing, lying down, breathing, and many more. Most of what our head does is thanks to the cervical spine.

Protecting your spine, Headache

That is why many injuries in this area are so serious that they often result in paralysis or death.

For example, hitting your head at the bottom of the pool or playing sports can compress the cervical spine against the shoulder and cause serious injuries. Even everyday headaches often involve the cervical spine.

And that is why you will be glad to know that chiropractors have paved the way to recognize the uniqueness of the cervical spine, even compared to the rest of the spine, and take care of it accordingly.

Prevention in our children is very important, and we must not forget that they should also have check-ups to avoid headaches.
