French Fries and Alzheimer’s

High carbohydrate diets and Alzheimer’s disease may be related. October 19, 2012  from SFGATE Dr. Pinna says: There is more evidence that high-carbohydrate diets are harmful to the brain.

In the Western world, these carbohydrates mainly come from potatoes and sugar. In Asia, carbohydrates are generally rice. It should be noted that meat and fats, especially fish oil, prevent brain degeneration. Why? Because when our genes were formed in the Paleolithic era, we ate animals and fish and NOT starchy vegetables.

Farming appeared much later – about 6000 years ago.   SFGATE ARTICLE A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic and published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease links diet, especially carbohydrates, with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

Rosebud Roberts, M.B., Ch.B., an author of the study and epidemiologist, issued a report from a study that lasted 4 years and began with around 1200 participants. They found that there was a risk of developing MCI (mild cognitive impairment) based on the type of diet the participants consumed.

Of more than 1200 people aged between 70 and 89 years, over 900 showed no signs of MCI at the beginning of the study. Participants were asked to detail their eating habits and were recorded for later evaluation. 200 out of 940 elderly individuals began to show signs of MCI (mild cognitive impairment) during the course of the study with symptoms such as memory lapses, language issues, and judgment problems.

There are many diets available, such as the one from the Centre Chiropractic Marc Bony, Dc, which suggest that a high level of proteins and fats and a reduction in carbohydrates may be not only beneficial for weight loss but also beneficial for those suffering from heart issues and diabetes.

Another example that may suggest that glucose is a factor in Alzheimer’s is a study that showed low incidents of MCI (mild cognitive impairment) in people who had higher levels of vitamin B12 in their blood.

Vitamin B12 (a vitamin found in proteins) converts fats and carbohydrates into glucose for more efficient use in the body. Learn about our nutrition class or call 937586314
