Repair Cycles: Corrective Chiropractic Reversal

When the care of the upper cervical spine was beginning to develop as an art and science, Dr. B.J. Palmer wrote the following information. The linguistic style in which it is presented may seem different.

However, keep in mind that his words are as valid today as they were years ago. The laws of nature are invariable.
“Just as it took time to change from a healthy state to a maximum degree of abnormality, it will take time to UNDO THE PROCESS AND RETURN TO HEALTH.”

Reversal: Repair Cycles

What does Corrective Reversal mean? It primarily implies going back through previously traversed ground until the individual reaches the point from which they started.

When a patient is receiving chiropractic care for the upper cervical spine, they often present symptoms that had not manifested for months or even years.

Their first impression might lead them to think they are getting worse; however, they are undoing the different states that developed as the disease progressed.

Time is an essential factor when it comes to reversing the progression of the disease. The patient should not always expect recovery to the normal state within a few days, especially if the disease has been in progress for several years.

Just as it took time to change from a healthy state to a maximum degree of abnormality, it will take time to undo the process and return to health.

The response may vary

The recovery time does not always correspond with the time it took to develop the disease. Generally, however, it should be noted that acute diseases respond quickly, while chronic cases that have persisted for a long time show a slower response.

Certain abnormalities show a wide implication of tissues, unlike others where there is less involvement. The structures must, in any case, retrace the various steps that were taken to adopt their normal condition.

This is easily observed in skin rashes, in areas where the tissue has gradually changed its state to reach its maximum degree of abnormality, and where a corrective reversal occurs, showing the same symptoms in the appearance of the skin until it returns to its normal state. The same process occurs in tissues of the body that are not visible.

What the Chiropractic Doctor Specializing in Upper Cervical Care Does

The doctor who specializes in upper cervical care has been meticulously trained to detect the abnormal positions of the vertebrae in the spine. Furthermore, they are trained in the technique of returning these vertebrae to their correct position.

It is normal for the patient to wonder why the chiropractic doctor cannot adjust the vertebra to its normal position immediately, thus restoring the tissue to its state of health in an instant.

In fact, what happens after an adjustment is that the vertebra returns to its normal position, giving ligaments and muscles a chance to partially regain their proper tone, allowing them to maintain the vertebra in a state more similar to normal.

To Remember

Even though the vertebra is “adjusted”, the spine and the body in general are subjected to more or less tension in day-to-day life, and it is possible for the vertebra to revert to its old abnormal state repeatedly, requiring further adjustments.

Remember that tissues must be frequently rebuilt for the vertebra to remain in its normal position. Additionally, tissues that have adopted an abnormal condition for years, due to the gradually increasing pressure on the nerve fibers, need time to revert through the different states they have experienced while generating the abnormality.

All of this takes time, and patience becomes the main virtue, being aware that everything is progressing as it should.

Corrective Reversal

It can be seen that there is a corrective reversal in the vertebra from the time it reaches its highest degree of misalignment until the time it returns to its normal state.

This reversal also occurs in the condition of the tissues supplied by the affected nerve fibers. These gradually reached a maximum point of abnormality and must return by passing through the same stages they reached in their deterioration process.

This reversal occurs not only in the vertebrae and tissues affected by subluxation but also in the manifestation of the symptoms that occurred in the patient.

Various Stages

Different stages of disease generate different symptoms, and as corrective reversal occurs, symptoms that appeared years ago may resurface.

If the vertebra is quickly returning to its normal position, it is likely that a series of symptoms will manifest in a short period of time, leading the patient to believe they are getting worse.

In reality, at this moment, their appearance is bright, and the patient should recognize it. Obviously, if they do not understand their condition, they will believe they are getting worse.

Nothing could be further from the truth; this is the moment when they should continue with chiropractic care, as results are being achieved that will culminate in the best state of health.

There Must Be a Reversal

Whether it is an acute or chronic disease, there must be a corrective reversal in the position of the vertebra and in any structural or functional change that has occurred.

Simply put, and this is the truth, there must be a reversal in the symptoms. In acute diseases, they may be so insignificant that they are not even perceived.

Ultimately, every patient receiving chiropractic care should realize their need to continue with chiropractic treatment, even if improvement is not noticeable from day to day, or if they believe their condition is worse.

It is essential to go through this process of corrective reversal and not allow temporary discouragement to hinder the final health that will be theirs if they continue.
