Bruxism and Chiropractic

Bruxism and Chiropractic

Bruxism is an unconscious, rhythmic movement of the chewing muscles.

It is more common in children; however, in adulthood, the bruxism habit can cause problems in frequency and intensity.

The Causes of Bruxism

Stress: Plays a very important role in bruxism; patients with bruxism generally have high levels of stress.

Dental abnormalities: Cause misalignment and attempt to wear down those differences to achieve a better fit.

Wearing down does not only fail to solve the problem but aggravates it, as the more the teeth wear down, the worse they fit together.

Exercises for Bruxism

Take a cork from a bottle of wine or sparkling wine, place it between your upper and lower teeth, and hold it there for 15 minutes a day.

If the whole cork is too large at first, cut it down until it is the right size for your jaw. As your jaw gets used to the size, take a larger cork until you can hold a normal-sized cork for 15 minutes without any problem.

Especially at the beginning, you will salivate a lot; you can do this exercise in the shower or comfortably at home.

Bruxism and Chiropractic

Consult your Doctor of Chiropractic for other types of exercises you can perform for this condition. There are several specific adjustments focused on the upper cervical vertebrae of our spine and the jaw that a Doctor of Chiropractic can perform. This can help you reduce not only the pain but also the intensity.

With chiropractic adjustments, stress and anxiety can also be reduced, thus decreasing the need to grind your teeth.
